Understanding South African Value-Added Tax (VAT) in 2026
📐 The Standard 15% VAT Formulas
South Africa increased the standard VAT rate from 14% to 15% on 1 April 2018. When calculating VAT:
- Adding VAT: Amount Excl. VAT × 1.15 = Amount Incl. VAT.
- Extracting VAT Only: Amount Excl. VAT × 0.15 = VAT portion.
- Removing VAT (Reverse): Amount Incl. VAT ÷ 1.15 = Amount Excl. VAT.
- Statutory Tax Fraction: Amount Incl. VAT × (15 / 115) = VAT portion.
🏢 2026 Compulsory vs Voluntary Registration Thresholds
SARS and National Treasury enacted historic threshold updates under Section 23 of the Value-Added Tax Act:
- Compulsory Threshold (R2.3 Million): Registration is mandatory only when taxable supplies exceed R2,300,000 in any consecutive 12-month period (increased from the previous R1,000,000 threshold).
- Voluntary Threshold (R120,000): Businesses may voluntarily register once taxable supplies exceed R120,000 in the past 12 months (increased from R50,000), allowing input tax recovery on capital assets and operating expenses.
- Deregistration Option: Registered vendors whose annual taxable turnover is below R2.3 million now qualify to apply for voluntary VAT deregistration if exemption is commercially advantageous.
- Filing Cycle: Most SMEs file bi-monthly (Category A or Category B) via SARS eFiling on the 25th (manual) or last business day (electronic).

Frequently Asked Questions About South African VAT
How do I remove 15% VAT from an inclusive amount?
To remove VAT from an amount that already includes 15% VAT, divide the total by 1.15. For example, if a product costs R1,150 inclusive of VAT: R1,150 ÷ 1.15 = R1,000 exclusive amount. The VAT amount is R150 (which equals R1,150 × 15/115).
What items are zero-rated for VAT in South Africa?
Under Section 11 of the VAT Act, zero-rated goods (0% VAT) include 19 basic foodstuffs (such as brown bread, maize meal, samp, rice, unprocessed vegetables and fruit, milk, and eggs), illuminating paraffin, direct exports of goods, and international transport services.
Can a business claim input tax without a valid tax invoice?
No. SARS legislation strictly prohibits claiming input VAT deductions without a valid full tax invoice in your possession at the time of submission. For purchases under R50, an abridged invoice or till slip is acceptable. Between R50 and R5,000, an abridged tax invoice is permitted. Exceeding R5,000, full customer name and VAT registration number must be present.
