NYDA Funding: Grants for Young Entrepreneurs (How to Apply)

Grants range from R1,000 up to a lifetime maximum of R200,000 per individual or business (R250,000 for agriculture and technology projects). Applicants register on the NYDA portal, complete business management training, pitch their business for 10 minutes and pass a due diligence visit.

What is NYDA funding?
The National Youth Development Agency (NYDA) is the state agency responsible for youth development in South Africa. It used to give loans; today its main business finance product is the NYDA Grant Programme, aimed at youth entrepreneurs at the early and growth stages of a business.
NYDA support comes in a few forms:
- Grant Programme: non-repayable funding for individuals, youth co-operatives and community development projects.
- Voucher Programme: vouchers to buy business support services (for example business plans, marketing or registration) from NYDA-approved service providers.
- Thusano Fund: a separate fund for students and youth NGOs with a specific financial need, not for business start-up capital.
- Non-financial support: mentorship, business consultancy, market linkages, the Business Management Training programme and youth co-operative development.
Grant recipients are also expected to take part in the non-financial support, so treat it as a package rather than just a cheque.
How much can NYDA fund you?
| Applicant | Grant amount |
|---|---|
| Individual or business | R1,000 up to R200,000 cumulative over your lifetime |
| Agriculture and technology-related projects | Up to R250,000 cumulative |
| Youth co-operatives | Separate thresholds; check the NYDA Grant Programme Thresholds document |
The amount you are approved for depends on the business’s stage, the quotations you submit and the due diligence. Ask for what the business actually needs and can justify with quotes; inflated requests are a common reason for cuts or rejection.
Who qualifies for NYDA funding?
- Age 18 to 35. Apply at least three months before you turn 35, so the process can finish while you still qualify.
- South African citizen and resident, operating the business inside South Africa.
- You have the skills, experience or potential skills the business needs.
- You are involved in the day-to-day running of the business, and at least one member (especially the main applicant) works in it full time.
- Annual turnover is below R750,000 (co-operatives below R1 million).
- You pass a credit check. NYDA checks credit on every application, and applicants under debt administration are not considered.
High-school learners, unrehabilitated insolvents and people with a fraud conviction are excluded. Rehabilitated youth in conflict with the law can apply.
What NYDA grants can and cannot pay for
Can be used for
- movable and immovable assets (equipment, machinery, tools);
- bridging finance;
- shop renovations;
- working capital, paid directly to the grantee;
- co-funding alongside other legal entities.
Not funded
- Vehicles;
- second-hand equipment, except industrial equipment with at least five years’ remaining lifespan;
- businesses where alcohol or tobacco is the primary income, or gambling, pyramid schemes, loan sharking, the sex industry or illegal activities;
- partial funding, or a deposit for a loan from another lender; refinancing existing loans; replacing an existing financier;
- settling SARS debt;
- prototyping (except cell phone app development), research and development seed capital, patent registration, or buying exclusive distribution rights;
- applicants who still owe NYDA, previously received NYDA SME loans or had NYDA loans written off;
- applicants who have already received more than R500,000 from another development finance institution.
Documents you will need
- Certified copy of your ID (and of every member or shareholder).
- Proof of residence.
- Business registration documents: CIPC certificate, or co-operative registration.
- Proof that you attended NYDA’s Business Management Training, which is required before your application is assessed.
- A business plan with realistic financial projections.
- Supplier quotations for everything you want funded.
- Bank statements and, if trading, basic financial records.
- Where relevant: a lease or proof of business premises, licences and permits.
Every South African funder checks compliance before it looks at your idea. Sort these out before you apply:
- CIPC good standing: the company is “in business” and its annual returns are up to date.
- Beneficial ownership filed with CIPC: BO declaration.
- Directors and shareholders match the application: file a CoR39 if the board changed, and have share certificates and a securities register that agree with your ownership claims.
- SARS tax compliance status (TCS) PIN for the business, and personal tax affairs in order.
- B-BBEE affidavit or certificate confirming ownership and, where relevant, black ownership percentages.
- Bank statements (usually the last 3–6 months) and, for trading businesses, management accounts or annual financial statements.
How to apply for NYDA funding, step by step
- Register on the NYDA portal (or visit your nearest NYDA branch, or call 0800 58 58 58).
- Complete the Business Management Training and keep the attendance proof.
- Submit the application with all the required documents.
- Pitch your business in a 10-minute presentation, in person or by phone.
- A NYDA official carries out a due diligence assessment at the business.
- The Branch Grant Approval and Review Committee (BGARC) decides. Its decision is final and can’t be appealed, but you can re-apply.
- If approved, disbursement is processed by head office.
How long does it take? NYDA’s service standard is 30 working days for the branch to process an application, and 30 working days for head office to process disbursement once approved: roughly three months end to end, longer if documents are missing.
How to make your NYDA application succeed
- Lead with customers. Name who is buying, at what price, and how you reach them: orders, letters of intent or a sales history beat any market statistic.
- Make the numbers add up. The amount requested must equal the quotations; the projections should include cost of sales, rent, salaries and your own drawings, not just revenue.
- Show what the grant changes. “This machine lets us produce 300 units a week instead of 80” is far stronger than “we need equipment”.
- Know your pitch cold. Ten minutes: problem, customer, product, numbers, what the money buys, and what you have already done without it.
- Be ready for the visit. Assessors check that the business exists and that you run it.
Why NYDA applications are rejected
- Turnover above the R750,000 threshold, or the applicant is over 35 by the time it is assessed.
- Adverse credit or debt administration.
- Requests for excluded items: vehicles, second-hand equipment, SARS debt or refinancing.
- No evidence of customers; projections that are not believable.
- Quotations missing or not matching the amount requested.
- The applicant isn’t really running the business day to day.
NYDA vs sefa vs NEF vs IDC: which funder fits you?
| Funder | Type | Typical amount | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| NYDA (this guide) | Grant (not repaid) | R1,000 – R200,000 (R250,000 agri/tech) | Youth aged 18–35 starting or growing a small business |
| sefa | Loans; some blended loan-grant programmes | Direct lending ~R500,000 – R15 million | SMMEs and co-operatives with contracts or trading history |
| NEF | Debt, quasi-equity, equity | R250,000 – R50 million (iMbewu / uMnotho) | Black-owned and managed businesses, acquisitions, franchises |
| IDC | Loans, equity, guarantees | From R1 million | Manufacturing, agro-processing, mining and green industrial projects |
Can you get business funding for free?
Genuinely free money (grants) is limited. The NYDA Grant Programme is the main national grant for youth-owned businesses, and some programmes (such as sefa's manufacturing support) include a grant portion. Most state funding from sefa, the NEF and the IDC is repayable: loans, or equity the owners buy back. Be wary of anyone who charges an upfront fee to “guarantee” a government grant. The agencies do not charge application fees.
What every funder needs from you
- Certified ID copies of the owners, and proof of address.
- CIPC registration documents, current annual returns and beneficial ownership.
- A SARS tax compliance status PIN and a B-BBEE affidavit.
- A business plan with financial projections, plus quotations for what the money will buy.
- Bank statements and, if trading, management accounts or financial statements.
